Alex Gavis

Alexander Gavis has more than 30 years of experience in financial services, advising extensively on the regulation and distribution of brokerage, investment company, and investment advisory products and services.

Alex recently retired as Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel in the Corporate Legal Department of FMR LLC, the parent company of Fidelity Investments.  During his twenty-five years of service, he advised Fidelity’s most senior leaders responsible for the distribution of the Fidelity and FundsNetwork funds and the retail brokerage and workplace retirement businesses.  Throughout his time at Fidelity, Alex served as lead counsel for Fidelity’s electronic business, innovation, and technology initiatives.  He played a vital role in moving Fidelity and the fund industry forward on many marketing, electronic, and technology initiatives, working closely with regulators on new approaches to doing business.  He is a recognized authority in these areas, regularly speaking on industry panels, authoring articles, and serving on industry and government committees.  He has established expertise in cyber risk and privacy issues and holds a patent relating to blockchain technologies.

Earlier in his career, Alex served as Assistant Counsel at the Investment Company Institute, representing mutual funds and investment advisors, and as Senior Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, both in Washington, DC.  His prior business experience also includes handling investment banking matters at Salomon Brothers Inc in New York.

Alex is currently serving as Special Counsel in the Investment Services Group of the international law firm, Eversheds Sutherland, and teaches as an adjunct professor at Suffolk University Law School.  He is an appointed member of the FINRA Investor Issues Committee and serves on the board of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston.  He holds a B.A. with High Honors, Phi Beta Kappa, from Swarthmore College and a J.D., cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School.
