Mr. Miles has been the Associate Commissioner, Securities, in the Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) since July of 2000. From 2005 to 2007, Mr. Miles was the Chair of the Investment Adviser Section of NASAA. From 2007 to 2009, he was a member of the Corporate Accountability Section of the Corporation Finance Section. From 2007 to 2011, he was a member of NASAA’s Investor Education Section. From 2007 to the present, he has been a member of the Legal Services Committee. In 2012, he rejoined the Investment Adviser Section Committee as a member. In April, 2014, he became a member of the board of the Investor Protection Trust. Mr. Miles came to DISB from the National Science Foundation, where he was the Deputy General Counsel. Immediately prior to going to the National Science Foundation, he was Vice President for Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary of National Public Radio. Mr. Miles has also held senior legal positions in various federal regulatory agencies, including the Division of Trading and Markets of the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Economic Regulatory Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy. In addition, Mr. Miles taught Corporations and other securities-related courses at Howard University School of Law for more than twenty years. Mr. Miles has been a speaker on Securities subjects at the ABA, the District of Columbia Bar, and other organizations. He is a former member of the Administrative Conference of the United States and has been a volunteer mediator with the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He was the first law clerk for U.S. District Judge (later Chief Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit) Spottswood W. Robinson, III.
