James B. Adelman is a Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Commonwealth Financial Network, the nation’s largest privately held independent broker/dealer founded in 1979. Commonwealth which is also registered with the SEC as an investment advisor, supports approximately 1800 independent registered representatives nationwide, and makes available a comprehensive array of financial products and services. As Principal Counsel, Mr. Adelman is responsible for overseeing all legal and regulatory aspects of the firm. He is also the firm’s chief AML officer and privacy officer. Previously, Mr. Adelman was Vice President and Group Counsel for Broker-Dealer Operations, Regulatory Affairs, and Litigation for Allmerica Financial Corporation and its subsidiaries. Before he joined Allmerica, Mr. Adelman was the Associate District Administrator for the Boston District Office of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Mr. Adelman also was a partner in the litigation department of Choate, Hall & Stewart. Mr. Adelman received his BA from Bucknell University and his JD cum laude from American University’s Washington College of Law. He is admitted to the Massachusetts, D.C., and Virginia Bars.
